EP20-UsSorry it took a while to update this.

In this episode we first reviewed Robin William’s death and talked about whether or not it’s to commit suicide, we talked about the plane crash near Tehran’s international airport within three minutes of take off, and our main topic was…(drum roll): sex before marriage.

Our guest, Dr. Sirus Agahi held that in patriarchal societies like Iran women should be careful not to let men dominate them by taking their virginity before marriage. I, of course, strongly opposed with that. I mentioned that a) ‘society’ is us sitting at that table and how we talk about this issue should not be according to some vague larger idea of what society does and does not accept b) women’s power is not in their vagina (holler) c) the year is 2014, people. I also talked about the Western media favourite term, “Iran’s sexual revolution” which I think is overdone. Iran hasn’t had a sexual revolution, it’s been a gradual trend since the 60s. But yes, as there are many rules and regulations for relationships between men and women (briefly putting aside homosexual relationships), people are exploring and breaking sexual norms on their own, without proper guidance or education for both their physical and emotional health.

Ep20-guestThe reaction to our discussion about premarital sex was revelatory for me. Judging by the comments online, most critics of premarital sex are men/boys who like having sex, but also want to marry a virgin. On the other hand, a lot of girls/boys claimed that these discussions are out dates as everyone is already having premarital sex.

I could go on, but it’s an interesting debate and also, will get to the subtitles soon as someone is helping me with them.
