Matisse – The Red Room: Harmony in Red (1908)

“Dear _______,
I’m only writing to you because I haven’t so
in so long
and summer is ending
today
because I feel exhausted and I will
be even more
after all the hunting

The hunting that comes before winter
and my long days of biting
and then the guilty feeling of being too full
spitting out chunks of meat
vomiting like a hairy cat.

I hope you are well, as I hear
you hate both the summer and the winter
and other seasons do not grab your attention
and I hope while you imagine me hunting
and chewing
and releasing smiles that smell of blood
and exuding red from my cheeks
and feeling thirstier and more hungry, only
to realize
I am sick already

I hope you imagine the joy
I take
in knowing you are imagining this
right now
while I will be eating you
so soon-

Mine, forever, you.”
